This unique match strike—or pyrogène in French—is a reproduction of those found throughout late 19th and early 20th century Europe. Back then, it was common to see a match striker sitting on a bistro table or bar. The strikers served three purposes. First, the hollowed-out top was used to store matches. Secondly, its side or base (with its ribbed surface) was used to strike and ignite the match. And lastly, the piece served as an advertising venue.
White-tip, or "Strike Anywhere," matches are suggested for use and are available here and at specialty stores. Regular household kitchen matches will not light, as the white-tip match is needed. White-tip, Strike Anywhere kitchen matches are used in the photo. The strikers can also be used to hold a variety of items, such as toothpicks.
Why I like It It's so much nicer than a box of random matches laying around, and it's also a nice conversation starter.

Caring for your pyrogene
Some people like the look of the match striker accumulating strike marks over time and will prefer to keep it looking this way. These marks give the striker even more of an antique look. However, if you wish to remove the marks, they can easily be wiped off using a rag (or paper towel) and a mild cleanser.
